Mayhem / Mortiis

Today, it is difficult to say “black metal” at all, without Mayhem being one of the first bands that come to mind. Formed back in 1984, Mayhem is everything, just not an ordinary band. At the very beginning, they reject the coming trend of speed metal in that period, and decide to dive into a world that will change the game forever and from which the average person in Norway will live in fear for years.

Mayhem is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1984 in Oslo, which has long been considered one of the pioneers of the Norwegian black metal scene. Mayhem’s career is very controversial, primarily because of their violent stage performances, with the suicide (1991) suicide of vocalist Per Jung Olin (“Dead”) and the murder in (1993) of guitarist steystein Aarseth (“Euronymous”) of former member Varg Vickersnes. (“Count Grishnackh”). The group released demos and EPs, which were very influential and gathered loyal followers through sporadic and notorious live performances, drawing further attention through their links to a number of Norwegian church circles and incidents of violence surrounding them. They broke up after the murder of Aarset, shortly before the release of their debut album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, which was considered a classic of the black metal genre. Survivors of former members Hanghammer, Necrobutcher, and Maniac Sven Eric reformed two years later with Rune Eriksen (Blasphemer), replacing Aarset. Attila Cihar replaced Christiansen.Their post-Aarseth material is characterized by increased experimentation. Mayhem’s latest album, Ordo Ad Chao, won the Spellemannprisen Award for Best Metal Album in 2007.

Mortiis is one of the original members of the Emperor. A band that, along with Mayhem, is one of the pioneers in making it later known as the Norwegian Black Metal. Mortiis, however, will take a completely different path from his compatriots. His music from the beginning until now is quite diverse, but the most commonly used term is Dungeon Synth. For 15 years he has been constantly touring and some of the more resonant names with which he has shared the stage are: Danzig, Behemoth, Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist, Christian Death, Mushroomhead, The Genitorturers, Deathstars.
