Moroccan-born, Paris-based, singer-songwriter Hindi Zahra is a kind of postmodern Billie Holiday. The artist grew up listening to all manner of music genres, from rock to reggae to traditional Berber. After settling in France in the early 1990s, Zahra kick-started her career as backing vocalist for a music collective led by singer Spleen and guitarist Hugh Coltman. Besides that, she wrote her first lyrics and melodies. In 2007, she made her live debut as a solo performer. Her first album “Handmade” was released in 2010 for jazz label Blue Note Records, and together with the single “Beautiful Tango” sold in more than 150.000 copies worldwide. Sweet melodies, profound lyrics (sung in English or Berber, Zahra’s two favorite languages), “Handmade” offers delicate folk, quite intimate and tinged with his blues influences. Hindi Zahra’s second album, “Homeland” is due to be released in April 2015. In 2014 Hindi Zahra had roles in the films “The Narrow Frame of Midnight” by Tala Hadid and in “The Cut” by Fatih Akin.
